Build 2017: Microsoft embraces iOS and Android and shows new spirit

During Build 2017, Microsoft´s annual developers conference, it became clear that Apple and Google are still the enemy, but that their devices will work seamlessly with Windows 10. That is good news for the millions of iPad, iPhone and Android phone and tablet users. They will be able to share data with Windows 10 devices, but also install Windows apps and in reverse be able to install for example iTunes on a Windows 10 computer.

Other news is that Microsoft will attempt to acquire a share of the Oracle market with a new powerful database service. If Microsoft´s Azure Cosmos DB will be able to do this will be clear very soon. But, it is good that Oracle is getting some competition in the Big Data area.

Big Data is also how Microsoft shareholders will see a return on the expensive LinkedIn acquisition. Microsoft boss Nadella showed how LinkedIn, Dynamics 365 and Office will be integrated into one software service which will connect marketing, sales, customer service, finance, HR and operations. No mean feat, but if it works it will be a money making machine.

There was good news also for software developers. The introduction of Fluent will give them a design language in which depth, light, motion and other special effects will be easily usable in the app. Apps with VR and AI will definitely be grateful for this.
A new spirit and diversity
Another remarkable thing during Build 2017 was the atmosphere of optimism, but especially of diversity of the speakers. No stream of middle-aged white men in suits with boring stories, but dynamic presentations from young men and women reflecting our society. It seems like Microsoft has found its way after the Balmer years and will defend its place in the top three. Google and Apple are warned!
