PDF/R will be the end of the TIFF data format

TIFF formatThe Tagged Image File Format, published in 1986 by Aldus Corporation, will soon be a thing of the past.  TWAIN Working Group and PDF Association have developed a specification for a more compact file format based on PDF. The format promises more possibilities than TIFF. PDF/R allows images to be shared, via TWAIN Direct, between scanners, computers and mobile devices of various brands. PDF/R is ISO compatible and will be available before long. More information about PDF/R via this link.
