Packaging made out of marine waste

bb1%c2%a761114-bio-packagingIn Spain researchers have produced sustainable packaging from fish and algae waste. The Basque researchers were looking for new methods to use local industrial waste for new materials.

The researchers from the University of the Basque Country were able to produce bio degradable and compostable packaging materials from marine waste. The material is versatile enough to fit into current plastic production processes.

Cellulose and the protein chitine can be extracted from the waste. These can be transformed into film and this film can be made suitable for heat sealed applications with excellent properties for gasses and fatty products.
