Donderdag 14 april GLU Pro•lezing 7: Fotografe Marloes van Doorn

11 apr 2016
Categorie: ,

More work for printers, but prices continue to fall

11 apr 2016
Categorie: ,
Drupa Global Trends kleinPrint shops produced more work in 2015 and consequently more turnover than previous years. This was necessary to compensate lower prices.
How did print shops do in 2015. This is the subject of the 3rd Drupa Global Trends report. It appears that most print shops worldwide have seen their turnover rise (+ 19%), as well as their work (+ 23%). However, most print shops had to lower their prices (-13%) and their margins (-21%). The rising prices of paper also influenced the margins.
In Europe print shops had to lower their prices even more (-22%). We have seen the trend of higher production and lower prices for a few years now, since the 2008 economic crisis.

Please note: the percentages are number of print shops.

MakeCover: the story behind a FESPA Gold Award

10 apr 2016
Categorie: ,,

MakeCover FESPA Award projectThe FESPA Gold Award for MakeCover was no surprise to those in the know. The Delft station which was transformed by MakeCover into a spectacular art hall is very appealing and the right choice for the Decals category. MakeCover used self adhesive films and large format graphics to achieve the results.
For more information about this logistically challenging project with 3,858 drawings of more than 30 million dots by MakeCover in the press release below.

FESPA catches up with MakeCover Managing Director, Ronald Steenkist to learn more about the company’s offerings and the winning project ‘Delft Station’.

Last month, FESPA celebrated another successful year with an exciting Annual Awards ceremony. Printers, designers, manufacturers, publishers, staff and FESPA Associations gathered together at the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam, to celebrate the exceptional achievements of the print community over the past twelve months.

A variety of awards were presented throughout the evening, including the prestigious Best in Show Award, voted for across all the categories and awarded to the entry that deserves recognition for their innovation and excellence.

This year’s Gold prize in the category of Decals was awarded to MakeCover for its project Delft station.
Speaking after the winning announcement MakeCover Managing Director Ronald Steenkist commented: “It feels great to win, it’s nice to be rewarded for all the hard work you put in. I was up against stiff competition, so it’s amazing to know I’ve won.”

Delft station is a landmark building designed by Mecanoo Architects in Delft, Netherlands. The company chose a building that had a look in all directions. The lowered roof lines at the corners provide a gradual transition to the existing buildings and station and municipal office in one.

The new concourse is built on top of the tunnel and sits on the side of the inner city (Westvest) where travelers can reach the underground platforms.

The station is separated by a glass wall from the public hall (entrance side Coenderstraat) and is an integral part of the municipal office, the first, second and third floor of the building covers.

The office will soon house the municipal organization, with space for the public counters and workplaces, where residents and business owners will relocate to.

The ceiling has a height of 7,700 m2 and the image on it, ‘The Delft blue graph’, has been designed by Geerdes Designs. They had the historical plan of Delft around 1876, with the first station of Delft, and changed it to be suitable for the slat ceiling.

Applying 14.8 linear kilometers of foil and using a special software let the graphic to fit in the exact geometry of the straight and curved baffles. The baffles are 20 cm high, 7 cm wide and 30 cm apart.

The software then generated 3,858 drawings. The image is made up of over 30 million dots, of course, in the Delft blue colour, a total of 14.8 linear kilometers of film applied to the baffles.

“What makes this ceiling extra special is that the pattern moves in the ceiling and, from every angle the traveler has a different face.”

“The logistics was with no doubt the most challenging part of the project. The large volume of baffles, the different sizes and shapes of them and the way we had to apply the right drawing on the right baffle was what made this project so difficult and unique.”

“To ensure they don’t hit each other, we had to collaborate with the designer, Geerdes Design. We are therefore proud that the entire project went perfectly and produced a wonderful result.”

MakeCover is a Dutch company specialized in restyling of interior and exterior of buildings by using self adhesive films and large format graphics. The main applications they do are façade restyling with window frame films, wall graphics for interior decorations, restyling of furniture with self adhesive films, graphics and privacy films on glass and special projects.

The award-winning project, the Delft Station, is one of the most impressive works the company has created so far and definitely one of the most unique and special.

#6/11: The digital revolution of drupa 1990 versus the digital dominance at drupa 2016

The digital revolution of drupa 1990 versus the digital dominance at drupa 2016

10 apr 2016
Categorie:

Schermafbeelding 2016-04-07 om 15.58.40Everything was digital at drupa 1990, from the new generation scanners to managing automated offset presses. Linotype was one of the examples of the pre-press digitisation. Linotype seemed to be conquering the world with its LinoColor and System 1000. Pre-press manfufacturer Scitex gave a peak into the future of digital proofing. with its costly and slow iris proofprinter. On the AM Interantional stand I proudly showed visitors the AM Graphic Text organiser, a UNIX based super computer with screen and mouse to edit pages interactively. The AM GTO didn´t become a success, and neither did LinoColor and Iris. They were passed by in favour of Desk Top Publishing. AM International had another first at drupa that year, the first digital press, the AM ElectroPress. That was a liquid toner rotation press for the production of books. This monochrome press worked perfectly, but unfortunately there was no digital front end available powerful enough to drive it.
The fact that the digital developments were not an immediate success was not only due to technological imperfections, the average print shop just wasn´t ready. They preferred to invest in iron and the pre-press and digital workflow was not nearly ready. This took many years.

The digital revolution began at drupa 1990
desktop-publishingDTP, laser printers, image setters, affordable flatbed scanners were indicators of the digital revolution for the graphic industry. Quark showed version 3.3 of their lay-out software Xpress, something we would now call disrupting technology. With Extensions developers could add to Xpress, new possibilities like better gradient and typographic refinements. Possibilities which made DTP into competition for the traditional pre-press systems. And DTP grew rapidly after the 1990 introduction of the Apple Macintosh FX, the powerful replacement of the Mac SE. A desktop computer with a separate screen became the perfect work station for many graphic print shops. A relatively low investment and the short learning curve of DTP software seduced many companies to buy an Apple computer. Computers which became more powerful and could be equipped with larger and better screens, so that the colour display became good enough for the print industry.
The much improved image quality of the Postscript image setters, which thanks to new screening technology as HQS and FM solved the moire problems, were the basis of the digital revolution as started at drupa 1990. The experience with screening is ow being used in digital presses to get the perfect print quality we now regard as normal.

Digital dominance at drupa 2016
According to the experts drupa 2016 will be the packaging drupa, and undoubtedly offset and digital press manufacturers will be showing break through technology for one of the last growth markets of our industry. Developments which will emphasise the digital dominance. Not just digital presses, but also the successors of the Heidelberg GTOF-S five colour press with CPTronic, first shown at drupa 1990, will prove this. Offset presses where every facet of the printing process, from print parameters to highspeed cameras, will be automated. This makes for the choice of print technology a simple one and based on two factors only, price and delivery time. Digital print technology will continue to score on variable data and small quantities, but offset will play a dominant role in the coming few decades.
