GMC rupa_2nd_ENColour management specialist GMG will show their knowledge on their completely white drupa stand. Emphasis will be on colour management for packaging. Read more about GMG at drupa in the press release below.

Consistent colors for packaging professionals by GMG – even faster

At drupa, the software company is emphasizing what really counts: reliable partners and real know-how

Tubingen (May 17, 2016) – On the GMG booth, deliberately kept white, there will be as little as possible to distract from the essential messages. “We know color,” says Managing Director Ian Scott, “is not just any slogan. It’s our promise to deliver precise and reliable answers to questions involving color.”

For the packaging industry in particular, such answers are needed more than ever. While, previously, exact results were extremely difficult to predict on account of overlapping spot colors and the high number of substrates involved, GMG OpenColor can now provide the accuracy the industry needs. In conjunction with GMG ColorProof, GMG OpenColor is the world’s only genuine printing press simulator. More than that, it is not only about the ability to output color-accurate proofs. Thanks to spectral data that accurately reflects individual production environments, separation profiles can now also be created. Finally is it possible to prepare supplied offset print data for use in company-specific flexo print jobs – with no need for time-consuming retouching.

Alongside the main focus theme, packaging, GMG is also helping to bring security to the handling of another key issue, that of optical brightening agents (OBAs). As a partner of Fogra – the Graphic Technology Research Association – GMG has been involved in defining the new FOGRA51/52 characterization data right from the outset. Ian Scott makes the following pledge: “On our booth we’ll illustrate what everybody is talking about: the visual effect of varying light conditions on brightened and non-brightened substrates.”

Those who want to meet the GMG experts in person will find them in Hall 8A B10. Away from its booth, GMG is also represented by one of its team on the EPSON stand. At the Quadtech Print Performance Speaker Series (Hall 15 D50), Paul Barnes will be speaking about “Brand Color Management and Cxf in a Packaging Workflow” (June 1, 11.30am), while Juergen Seitz will be addressing the topic of “Common Color Appearance” (June 6, 2pm). In addition, GMG is also participating in the drupa innovation park (dip!).

Edale AIIR: automatisering in flexo

Edale drupaFlexospecialist Edale toont op drupa nieuwe oplossingen voor flexodrukkers die hun kwaliteit en productiviteit willen verbeteren. Lees in onderstaand persbericht hoe automatisering daarbij kan helpen.

TRANSFORMING PRINT ACCURACY
Edale launches AIIR system, to take flexographic print automation to new heights
New auto inking, print impression and liner and cross camera registration system (AIIR) controlled by AVT

Hampshire, UK – 16 May 2016 – Edale today announce their latest innovation in flexographic print: AIIR – fully automated inking and print impression and camera controlled liner and cross registration.  Edale have teamed up with press control system specialist AVT to integrate their camera based technology into the Edale range of FL3 and FL5 flexographic presses, guaranteeing an optimal level of registration not seen before in single pass printing.  Bespoke software developed in-house ensures that 5 additional motors, individually positioned on each print station adjust the print impression, inking and cross register to ensure the highest print quality.  AIIR is available as standard on all new Edale FL5 presses and can be purchased as an optional extra on the FL3 press.

As brand owners seek higher quality printing at lower costs, printers are constantly seeking ways to increase superior output whilst minimising costs.  By fully automating print and registration processes, the level of operator intervention can be reduced leading to fewer errors and a more consistent, higher quality final product.

Linear and Cross Registration

Registration marks are printed on each station and fed through to the AVT Helios S camera positioned at the end of the press. The camera analyses the relative positions of the marks and sends necessary corrections to the respective print stations. Sophisticated tracking software developed by Edale ensures that no additional corrections are made until the initial corrections have passed the camera, overcoming the common problem of an over enthusiastic operator.

To minimise waste, the AVT Helios S camera registration implementation is designed to complement Edale’s pre-register and print-to-mark register systems, ensuring that a saleable product can be achieved in no more than two web lengths of the machine. Increased linear and cross-registration accuracy can be maintained throughout the print run, without the intervention of operators manually adjusting registration settings which can lead to increased wastage and out of register prints.

Motorised Automated Print Pressure Control

The technology significantly reduces the number of operator inputs and time needed to set up a job by automatically positioning the pressure settings based on saved job data or material calliper. Print consistency is enhanced through operator defined profiles that adjust pressure relative to press speed.

The addition of the new AVT Helios S system, fully automatic image based pressure control technology, takes automation and quality to a new level by analysing all the print stations during make ready and adjusting the plate and anilox rollers automatically. This brings the press to perfect print pressure which further reduces the reliance on operator input by automating the initial setting of inking and print pressure at the start of each new job.

Laurel Brunner: Paper Chains

18 mei 2016
Categorie:

weforum-logo.2xWe’re all familiar with the annual shindig the World Economic Forum (WEF) hosts at Davos in Switzerland. It combines spectacular scenery with spectacular visions for our collective economic future. But we are probably less aware of the regular white papers the WEF puts out. One of their latest efforts is part of Project Mainstream, a collaboration between the WEF, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the McKinsey Centre for Business and Environment. Project Mainstream’s objective is to remove bottlenecks in processes, so that we can all transition to a circular economy. The group’s recent white paper deals with paper.

The addition of ink to paper causes difficulties with current recycling models. It is unrealistic to expect people to sort papers according to how they are inked prior to recycling them. But the addition of chemicals to paper impedes its reuse, because removing them damages the fibre, which constrains its use in future applications. There are apparently over 6,000 chemical compounds used in printing inks, so this is a big problem. Its scale, plus trends in the graphic arts, suggest that recycling processes have to change. They must be able to handle a constantly varying combination of inks and chemicals, so that the fibre can be reused.

This is especially important for digital printing papers, inks and toners, which use often quite complex chemical formulations. In the sign and display market for example, some applications require extreme scratch resistance and durability. Desirable application characteristics may severe restrict the print’s recyclability, once it reaches end of life. What is needed is recycling processes that support the diversity of printing technologies, inks and substrates, including digital. Recycling in the graphics industry needs a new approach, one that supports the chemical and substrate diversity of modern print.

The WEF’s white paper suggests that print buyers and printing companies should be “Riding the Fibre”. This sounds like a slogan for health food, but it’s meant to convey the perspective of paper fibres. The WEF asks people to consider print investment decisions in a series of don’ts, such as “don’t attach that to me or I’ll be thrown away” and “don’t attach that to me – getting rid of it might consume a lot of energy”. The paper provides guidelines so that we can consider substrates, inks, coatings, primers and production methods, with an eye to how effectively paper based print media projects can be recycled.

The problem with all of this is that it assumes people will bother to learn about recycling processes and make decisions accordingly. It also assumes that recycling processes are the same in every region, and that companies and their customers have control. This is one of the important lessons we have learnt about sustainability: control of every stage in the process is impossible for most of us. Still, little by little we move forward.

CRON at drupa with CtP and flexo image setters

17 mei 2016
Categorie: ,

Cron drupaChinese manufacturer CRON will show 6 new products at drupa. Not only CtP and flexo image setters, but also, according to the company, a revolutionary digital ink system and new environmentally friendly offset plates. Read more about CRON at drupa in the press release below.

Press Release – Source PIworld

The highlights of CRON’s drupa campaign take the company out of its traditional CTP market and into broader fields of offset press optimization, plate production and flexo packaging. Its theme for the show, “True Image, True Color, True Print” reflects the company’s pursuit of the ultimate solution to cost-effective, fast and perfect print production through creative technology application.

“Our future technologies have been inspired by our customers’ need for a 100% stable and reliable relationship between plate characteristics, CTP imaging, plate processing and on-press settings,” says Mike Xiang, CEO and founder. “This is the only way to truly ensure perfect and stunning print first time, every time in the most efficient and economic manner. CRON’s Holy Grail.”

In all, CRON will bring six new products to drupa (Hall 5, stand B24) to demonstrate its progress towards ‘perfect print,’ from processless plates to a totally unique approach to offset inking.

New Digital Inker
Closing the loop between prepress and press is not yet perfect but increasingly common on new offset presses. But as a technique it still eludes thousands of existing press users. CRON has solved this problem with a revolutionary digital inking system which enhances image quality, reduces ink usage and dramatically shortens the makeready time between jobs. Being modular, it can be retrofitted to any offset press.

“We are confident that our plate and imaging quality and accuracy are world class,” relays Mike Xiang. “Making sure that level of quality is transferred to the press is a key objective of our new inking system, giving printers a powerful new tool to compete against digital print.”

New Flexo CTP
CRON HDI Flexo CTP products are available in two formats: 900mm for label applications (to be shown at drupa) and 1600mm for general packaging work. Both are compatible with all digital photopolymer plates, ablative films and polyester-based letterpress plates.

Two versions of each model are available to enable users to tune production to their particular needs. “S” variants have a maximum resolution of 5080 dpi as standard and an exposure speed of 1.3 square meters per hour. “H” variants have a maximum resolution of 9600 dpi and a speed of 3.2 square meters per hour. Both use the same exposure platform, adapted from CRON’s latest magnetic linear drive system which has gained much praise in the offset CTP market for its ability to image accurate and high quality dots from 1-99%.

New UV and Thermal Plates
Two new plates join CRON’s portfolio. Sold under the Blackwood brand, they not only streamline the production process but also reduce costs and enable a higher level of environmental responsibility. The plates are manufactured under license by CRON’s Blackwood plant which, since opening in 2014, has made substantial inroads into the world market through high quality products, including Thermal, UV and Double Coated UV Ink resistant plates, at very affordable prices.

The new Blackwood low chemistry UV plate is unique. It minimizes the consumption of chemicals and water for UV exposed plates. With a simple ‘wash out’ bath, plates are press ready in seconds and exhibit exacting dot reproduction, from 1-98%, for either stochastic screening (20 micron) or conventional screening up to 200 lpi. The new low-chem UV plate will be commercially available in the second half of 2016.The new Blackwood low chemistry UV plate exhibits exacting dot reproduction. With a simple ‘wash out’ bath, plates are press not only ready in seconds but the process minimizes the consumption of chemicals and water.

The new Blackwood process-less Thermal plate is compatible with all thermal platesetters and requires no processing or post-imaging wash out. Mounted directly on the press after imaging, it delivers exceptional printing characteristics with a 1-99% tonal range in both conventional and stochastic screening (200 lpi or 20 micron), fast run up, minimum usage of dampening solution and a low carbon footprint. Previewed at drupa, this plate will be available in early 2017.

New Automation for VLF CTP
The modular design philosophy of CRON’s existing platesetters means that they can be supplied standalone or as a fully automated plate line, with feed, transport, punching and processing options for inline and unmanned operation. The latest addition is a new Autoplate unit, now available worldwide for VLF CTP units. Offering faster and accurate loading for the 100 plates that can be held online, the new combination is ideal for book and web offset printers as a lower-cost, latest technology replacement for existing equipment.

New Automated CTP
The first in a line of all-in-one CTP solutions will be previewed by CRON at drupa. The new solution combines cassette input with precision imaging, punching and transport, providing a low cost, easy-to-use and compact unit which is easy to maintain.

The exposure engine is based on CRON’s market-leading magnetic linear drive platform which provides fault-free imaging across a wide choice of resolutions with registration accuracy up to 0.01mm and a tonal range 1%-99%, in either conventional or stochastic screening.

The first all-in-one solution (660mm/26” format) will be commercially available in the third quarter of 2016, with larger formats up to 1168mm/46” targeted for 2017. The existing range of CTP engines will be sold in parallel giving printers the choice to go for an all-in-one or modular solution.

“We are rigorously investigating the entire print value chain to identify ways in which our creative use of technology can improve the quality and efficiency of output while reducing viable print runs, turnaround times and costs,” concludes Mike Xiang. “We will continue to strive to get as close as possible to zero waste, zero color inaccuracies, zero start-up time and zero downtime. Perfect printing for all!”

CRON will feature a selection of its existing products at drupa. This includes Newspaper and Commercial CTP products together with a range of complementary automation options: autoloaders, punches, bridges, processors, processor control systems and software.

MGI to Launch the Fastest Meteor Super Format Digital Press Ever at Drupa 2016

New High-Speed Meteor DP1000 Digital Press Offers 100 ppm, 18pt Substrate Thickness and 47”/1200 mm Sheet Capabilities with Inline Finishing Options

FRESNES, France (May 12th, 2016) MGI Digital Technology has announced the worldwide release of the new high-production Meteor DP1000 digital press. The DP1000 is the sixth generation of MGI Meteor digital presses and now complements the existing DP8700 XL+ and DP8700 S+ solutions for a powerful full range of production presses with high-speed, plastic, synthetic & paper substrate and application diversity.

The range of supported size formats goes up to 13×47 inches. This extremely long format capability, unique in the market of high-volume digital printing, allows for the production of panoramic 5 panel gatefold documents such brochures, signs and banners on substrate stocks ranging from 80 to 450 gsm/ m².

Light Board Package Printing Capability

The ability to print on stocks on stocks with 18 pt. thickness and weights of 450 gsm means that the Meteor DP1000 can produce brilliant colors on board stock for small to medium-sized folding carton and box designs. This will be a tremendous benefit for package printers searching for a high-speed solution with variable data printing (VDP) options, as well as commercial printers seeking a cost-effective path to enter the world of packaging.

Worldwide Release @ Drupa 2016

The Meteor DP1000 will be demonstrated live at the MGI (Hall 5, Booth 21) at the upcoming drupa2016 international print trade fair from May 31st to June 10th in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Unique High-Speed Press & PostPress Finishing Integration

The MGI Meteor DP1000 can be integrated inline with the MGI DF Pro solution for an inline solution combines a new unique high-performance (100 pg/m) digital printing press and finishing system in one package. The Meteor DP1000 & DF Pro product suite delivers fully printed and finished documents in a single pass, all completed on the same equipment. The Meteor DP1000 & DF Pro system also eliminates all the traditional extra worksteps, time and complications of moving output to different work environments for finishing and job completion.

Improved Job Productivity & Turnaround Times

The DP1000 & DF Pro solution can produce a remarkable variety of graphical output – including up to 20 different finishing functions for photos, advertisements, full bleed letterheads and direct mailing jobs that are already creased, cut and trimmed when they come off the press. It can even produce complex folding packages and documents with strike perforated finishes for knock-out, punch-piece components. This solution is designed for high-volume production environments with speeds up to 100 pg/min (including finishing) and a duty cycle of 1 million pgs. per month.
